My Shoe Story

I love shoes! However, there was a point in time when I had a stronger interest in shopping for clothes and shoes. I had the mindset that having a nice and neutral pair of shoes would look great with any outfit I put together. What I didn’t realize back then, was that I valued shoes just as much as the pieces that make up my outfit. I credit my grandfather for feeding my minor, underlying shoe addiction.

It all began in 7th grade when all the girls in my class had Uggs. Of course I wanted a pair, because those were “in trend” at the time (2010). I asked my grandfather and after weeks of begging and $180 later I had my first official pair of “in trend”, “expensive” shoes. To be honest, shoes as super expensive because they can “lowkey” be considered an “investment” of some sort. Unfortunately, after I bought those Uggs, all the shoes I wanted after that and own today is about that price.

8th grade I asked my grandfather to buy me a pair of Converse XX-Hi sneakers/boots (not even sure how to categorize it). After scouring the internet, I found a unique pair of shoes that I was sure no one would have (mainly because they were discontinued; which was a high plus!) So, in 9th grade I asked my grandfather to buy Dr. Marten’s; a 16-gold eyelet pair, to be exact. 10th grade I asked for another pair of Dr. Marten’s; black with floral print. In 11th grade I got black Adidas Tubulars. Surprisingly, in 12th grade I asked for a designer bag instead of shoes. Over the years, I was fortunate enough that my grandfather and I sort of started a tradition that allows me to ask to buy me one expensive shoe per year.

Freshman year of college was a pure impulse buy! I didn't plan on buying pink Adidas Stan Smiths; I was really trying to by white Nike Air Force 1s (I got this past summer). Besides the highly convincing argument made by my best friend, the salesperson sold me with just one line: “There are only two in each size and they are limited edition, so if you don’t buy now, you may not get it anywhere else”!
